I took Papa's tape deck to the college workshop because it kept eating the good songs. Kabir asked which songs. That felt like a better question than what was broken.
SIDE A / THE FIRST RECORDING
Every song
has a story.
Pick a track. Hear it from both sides.
01August 2019The deck that wouldn't play+
She came back three times before it was ready. I thought she was worried about the deck. Much later she admitted she had already found another one.
02October 2019Track seven+
Six songs on Side A. Five on Side B. Then his voice, asking whether I liked chai. It took me two days to flip the tape. He thought I had said no.
I recorded that message eleven times. On the version she kept, a scooter goes past halfway through the sentence. It is still the most confident I have ever sounded.
03March 2021Two cities, one Sunday+
Bengaluru got Kabir. Vadodara got me. Every Sunday we sent one sound from our week: rain on a balcony, a new kettle, a terrible rehearsal. We called it our very small radio station.
Most of my recordings were seventeen seconds. Hers were seven minutes. I listened twice.
04November 2023Our first bad recording+
We missed a train, argued about whose fault it was, and spent the evening eating platform poha. This story doesn't skip that part. We learned that saying ‘I heard you’ matters more than winning the edit.
It was my fault. The booking was for the previous day. Please do not put this on the website. Apparently that instruction has not been followed.
05September 2025The blank stretch+
He gave me the same tape again. At the end was a new recording: ‘Should we keep making these?’ No choir. No hidden photographer. Just our kitchen and a ring beside the recorder.
She said yes before I finished asking. Then she asked me to play it again.
06February 2027Everyone we love+
We have replayed the beginning enough. Now we want to make a new recording—with our families singing slightly too loudly, our friends getting the steps wrong, and you somewhere in the middle of it.
